More and more multi-location businesses are embracing SD-WAN, adding on to existing MPLS networks, or even planning to replace them when the time comes. However, many businesses are still choosing MPLS circuits for secure connectivity. SD-WAN transforms the delivery of Wide Area Network (WAN) services to business users, improving connectivity and WAN management with extraordinary savings in cost and efficiency, but what is the right path and combination of technologies in every situation?

Join AireSpring's Senior VP of Solutions Engineering and SD-WAN expert, Mike Chase, J.D., CCIE #7726, for this fast-moving, information-packed webinar that will increase your SD-WAN IQ, helping you to become a true SD-WAN expert and grow your business as a result.

This AireSpring Partner Training Webinar will arm you with the facts and help you understand:

  • The differences between SD-WAN and MPLS.
  • When one may make sense over the other.
  • How the general security features of both options differ.
  • Why certain businesses may be increasing their MPLS footprint.
  • What are Universal CPE (uCPE), virtual xConnects, and SDN/NFV and what they bring to the equation and the future.

Learn why many SD-WAN company co-founders & CEOs agree that the relationship between SD-WAN & MPLS in many situations may be a "marriage, not a divorce."

To begin, please tell us a little about yourself, your company, and your professional background in Telecom.

In my current role at CDW, I work directly with customers as a subject matter expert (SME) in telecom as well as in cloud and colocation, and service providers. I'm working alongside our other SMEs for various technologies, whether network, collaboration, data center, and security. We demonstrate that we're dedicated to customers' long-term success, and that we're going to be there for them and that our success depends on theirs.

What do you like about working with AireSpring?

I've been working with Jon Massad, Regional Channel Manager, AireSpring for a little over two years. I like that AireSpring believes in fanatical support and total attention to detail. Jon understands that this is a relationship business. I not only like him as a person, I like his honesty, but also his ability to hold true to his commitments to the customer. When things break, and they inevitably do in telecom, Jon can step in and activate escalations quickly. AireSpring has that great Escalation List with contact information all the way up to the CEO, available for all customers and partners. As one of AT&T's top wholesalers, AireSpring has been able to help us with difficult issues, thanks to AireSpring's project managers and other resources staying with a problem, making sure that we could pull a customer out of a challenging situation, getting them into a better solution that is competitively priced, and with great support. Customers experience an upgrade in their account management and benefit from AireSpring's overall ability to resolve issues as they come up.

AireSpring offers a wide range of different service providers and carriers. I still have some customers that need the traditional MPLS-so it's nice to know there are options, and it's good to know there are so many great resources with AireSpring. A lot of our partners can't do what AireSpring does. AireSpring's wholesaler relationship with AT&T and other carriers also enables them to do a lot more for my customers.

I appreciate AireSpring's monthly training webinars, and the collateral is great. I like the idea of being able to peel the onion back with partners and look at why customers should care about a firewall, or show them what is the function of a firewall and what AireSpring does differently. Those collateral support pieces are super helpful. AireSpring's resources include great training with people like Mike Chase, SVP Solutions Engineering, and John Kitchen, Solutions Engineer, and all the really talented technical minds that they can bring in when we need to figure out how things work. We judge our partners on their capabilities, but also on the energy they put into a relationship.

Another thing that I like about AireSpring is its QuoteSpring online, real-time quoting tool and being able to get quotes as fast as possible. If it takes a long time to quote and it's a complicated process, the confused mind says "no," and our customers won't stand for that. It's never a problem at AireSpring. If it's not easy for a partner to explain their offering, they won't have confidence in it. In the channel it takes years to build a reputation and we hold our partners to the same standard that we are measured by, with little margin for error-it's too competitive a market. We have to make sure we surround ourselves with partners like AireSpring who are consistent and will execute.

What would you say is the secret to being a successful agent in today's marketplace

One key is having the business acumen to engage in the conversation about the impact on the organization, why they're doing this project in the first place. You must be able to understand their initiatives, challenges, and requirements, and then back into the technologies that are needed. You need a baseline understanding, being humble enough to realize that you're always going to be constantly learning, being a student of your industry and of the customer and their business. You have to truly understand their business and be seen as a business partner who will make a recommendation but also be there in perpetuity.

What is the "next big thing" you think agents should be aware of or get involved in for 2020-2021?

It's going to be all about understanding what the new normal looks like and how technology can help cope with a contact-free environment, enabling work from home and other issues. There's an overall demand for more and more bandwidth. People want options and are making more data driven decisions.

"There's an overall demand for more and more bandwidth. People want options and are making more data driven decisions."

What are some of your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy time with family, gardening, working in the yard, and as Californians do, I like to spend time at the beach and do some hiking.

Please tell us about your professional background and how long you've been in the telecom industry.

I have been in Voice and Data Communications since 1982 when I started out as the  telecom manager at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. I installed private T1 lines in 1983 from Malibu to Santa Monica for the 1984 Summer Olympics. Then I switched over to the data side which led to me being hired by Micom Systems (Micom Communications) in 1985 as a customer service engineer. I spent 15 years there working in several roles, including Technical Marketing Engineer, Sales Engineer and Business Development Manager. In the 1990s I was an International Systems Engineer for products going to Micom's 80 distributors. At that time, Micom Communications was a network elements manager (NEM) that created numerous voice and data products, including VoIP in 1992-1993. I have worked on everything from Micom Marathon to Micom muxes, X.25, data PBXs, and voice over anything products. I even had the opportunity to work in Air Force One, installing voice compression STU-III encryption devices. I was part of the team that sold Micom to Nortel in 1995-1996. At the time Nortel was buying Micom, I helped to create a network for all the credit unions on our military bases. I also made frequent visits to China, working inside customers' Beijing central offices. Between about 1992-1996 while working with Micom and Nortel (during the pre-Internet years) my territory covered the Asia Pacific region, which stretched from New Zealand up to Seoul, Korea. I went about once every quarter to Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and many other locations. We were selling a variety of products from data PBXs to voice compression. I continued working for Nortel until 2001, in the same role but with the new title of Business Development Manager for Passport 4400, which was the Nortel version of the Micom Marathon product.

In 2001 I joined SmartBits, a leading test and measurement company, then based here in Southern California, developing wireless products. I was a Technical Marketing Engineer, doing competitive analysis. By digging deep into about 20 top test and measurement companies, I got a better understanding and greater knowledge of how all the layers interact. SmartBits was soon bought by Spirent, a test and measurement company for ethernet and VoIP products and services. Spirent, in turn, hired me as a Competitive Analyst/Engineer.

Tell us about your role at AireSpring and how long you've been with the company.

I joined AireSpring in 2012 as a Sales Engineer working for Don Greenstein, now AireSpring VP of Account Management. Initially I was part of the Implementation Engineering team, then moved into Sales Engineering. Now I am part of the growing Solutions Engineering team. Our primary goal in Solutions Engineering is to help our channel partners close sales, but we wear many hats, from explaining how things work to non-techies, up to performing regression testing of the latest VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud™ software. We keep very busy in solutions engineering!

What do you enjoy most about working at AireSpring?

This is not just a job, I love what I'm doing. I never worked for a carrier before I came to AireSpring, and that interested me-really, I came for the technology. One of the attractions was that AireSpring was running SIP over MCA/MPLS (RFC 4364). Being a true nerd, I am always excited to see what new toys I am getting next. I have had the chance to build a Proof of Concept Lab (PoC) here. Having tested it 5 years earlier at Spirent, I couldn't wait to see it actually work here. As a Solutions Engineer, I really enjoy getting to mix and match different vendors' and network elements managers' products to create new AireSpring products that our end users find valuable. Our channel partners enjoy working with an engineer who knows all the layers.

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of the office?

My work actually is my hobby, namely voice and data communications. I come in to work early because I don't want to miss anything. That love of technology started when I tore apart my first Pong video gaming console and rebuilt it. My other hobbies include playing beach volleyball and enjoying the surf and sand. I also enjoy collecting old tech protocol guides, as well as car and truck emblems that I buy and sell online. I own over 3,500 and that keeps me busy. All the travel I did got me started in coin collecting and various collectibles found in other countries. In 2009 I took a break for three years and became a professional gambler, participating in the World Poker Tournament tour, before joining AireSpring.

I've been fortunate to travel over 4.3 million actual flight miles, while visiting over 100 countries and all seven continents-and I have the passport stamps to prove it! I have been to almost all South American countries, all U.S. states, and 20 of 38 provinces in Mainland China.
